EXPRESS YOURSELF THERAPY
Our Commitment to Inclusive,
Anti-Racist Care
At Express Yourself Therapy, we recognize that racism, white supremacy, and systemic oppression have caused profound and ongoing harm to individuals, families, and communities—particularly within Black, Indigenous, and communities of color. We also recognize that these systems have shaped the mental health field itself, influencing whose stories are centered, whose pain is validated, and what forms of healing have historically been valued.
Our practice is committed to providing therapy through a lens of social justice, cultural humility, compassion, and accountability. We believe mental health care must acknowledge the broader social, political, and historical realities that impact emotional well-being. This includes understanding the effects of racial trauma, intergenerational trauma, systemic inequality, and the daily realities of living within oppressive systems.
We stand in solidarity with the Black Lives Matter movement and firmly reject racism, racial violence, police brutality, and all forms of institutional oppression. We recognize that those of us who hold positions of privilege have a responsibility to actively examine our biases, challenge harmful systems, and participate in meaningful change.
We also acknowledge that the field of psychology has historically been shaped by Eurocentric frameworks that have often excluded, marginalized, or pathologized communities of color. In response, our clinicians are committed to expanding their understanding of culturally responsive, trauma-informed, and inclusive approaches to healing.
Our commitment goes beyond words. We actively work to:
-
Engage in ongoing education, consultation, and training focused on anti-racism, cultural humility, and dismantling systems of oppression
-
Examine our own identities, privileges, biases, and the ways these may show up in clinical work
-
Create space for honest, thoughtful conversations about race, identity, power, privilege, and intergenerational trauma
-
Foster accountability within our team through ongoing dialogue, reflection, and inclusive clinical practices
-
Prioritize equitable hiring practices and support the growth of a diverse clinical community
-
Build relationships with community organizations and explore ways to increase accessibility to care, including reduced-fee services when possible
We understand that anti-racist work is not a statement, a training, or a one-time commitment. It is an ongoing practice of reflection, accountability, repair, and action. We are dedicated to doing this work continuously so that every person who enters our practice feels respected, seen, and supported in their healing.
